Why We Fight

Because we don't like each other.  I know, based on other posts I have on here, some of you may have expected a lengthy rant about this war, or that military action but you know what, it's Saturday and after working a 18 hr shift yesterday, then working this morning I am not sure I have the energy to be all that serious.   After all, just two days left in the baseball season, and I am still in 2nd place (AL only) and third place (mixed) in fantasy baseball.  With just 48 hrs to go, and the possibility of making some coin on this deal, I am way geeked.  It is one thing to just hang around, but to be in the money with two games left, that is just way cool.

Football is another story.  With three different teams the best I can manage is 1-2 in two leagues (the other is worse at 0-2-1).   It is almost like I hired Dave Wannstedt to coach my teams.  What a disaster he has been for my beloved Pitt Panthers, who are now 1-4 after losing to lowly Rutgers this weekend.  Even worse is that their only win was against a 1-AA opponent (which is a full step down from major colleges which are 1-A).  The problem is when any team in PIttsburgh goes looking for a new coach, they want someone who has ties here.  In Dave's case, he used to play at Pitt.  Piece of advice for the next team in Pittsburgh looking for a coach:  Outsource the job.  I don't care if he is from Alabama or Albania, but let's get the best guy for the job, and not the best guy who also happens to have some lame ass connection to this city.

That loud thumping you hear is my heart, as we eke closer to the start of the NHL season.  I am so pumped for the team we have this year I can barely stand it.  The problem is going to be making it to a game this year, as season tickets have been swallowed up.  And they said fans wouldn't welcome hockey back after the lockout.  I can't speak for the other NHL cities, but that doesn't seem to be the case here in the 'Burgh'.

Lastly, to one Bill Bennett, former drug czar and Secretary of Education, who said on his radio show the other day that if you wanted to lower the crime rate you could abort black babies.  To be fair, his statement was taken somewhat out of context, as he was talking to a caller who was arguing the pro-life position from an economic standpoint, that being if we didn't abort 40 million babies since the Roe v Wade decision, then we would have more workers paying into Social Security thereby making that program more fiscally solvent.  Bennett correctly pointed out that not all of the 40 million would have went on to be productive workers, and some would be born into situations where they would have been taking money from the system (i.e. single mothers who need government assistance), so the idea of taking a pro-life position for economic reasons would  be suspect at best.  Bill went on to say that you could make the argument that you could lower the crime rate by aborting all black babies, it would be a ludicrous and morally reprehensible, but in the end, you would have a lower crime rate.

The problem with this argument isn't from a factual standpoint, what Bill said is in fact correct.  The problem is that when reaching for an argument by which to make his case, Bennett opts for a Nazi-like "Final Solution" with black children.  He could have argued that if you aborted children in general, the crime rate would go down.  Or he could have argued that if you outlawed automobiles, you could limit drunk driving deaths.  Any of a number of arguments could have been made to help substaniate what it is Mr. Bennett was trying to say, but it speaks volumes of the man, that when given an opportunity, decides instead to defend his position with an idea of aborting black babies.  The old adage is true, the racist doesn't always go to the swift.

And you thought it would be politics free.  Shame on you.  Have a good weekend everyone.
