I'll let the story speak for itself
For Everything, There’s Someone Else’s Mastercard
Surviving the evacuation of the worst natural disaster in recent history: $2,000
Showing off your freebie Red Cross MasterCard to a photographer for AFP, so he could distribute the photo to Yahoo News thus essentially opening up your relief account to any thief who happens to log on to the news site: priceless. Well, not quite priceless. MasterCard caught on after hundreds of purchases from eBay using her card number, an attempted purchase of a Ferrari (Thomas Magnum is so busted), and cash advances that reached $65,237.
It’s not that we blame Katrina victim Latesha Vinette. She’d been through a hell most of us can’t imagine, and could easily have been confused and grateful to be one of the recipients of the cards. She probably assumed the card number would be obscured in the photo – maybe she even asked it to be hidden. But the dimwit frog photog – and any photo editor in his right mind — should know better.
And the damn photo is still running in news stories.
No word as to whether the AFP paid a few months’ rent in advance before MasterCard caught on since he’ll surely be out of a job. (TG)
