AMA #2 - Election Night Special

Well, I said I would wait until the next month before doing one of these, and the next month has arrived.  Still, what better time to pull this off than on Tuesday night, as everyone here takes the opportunity to cast a ballot, because worst case scenario, it should make for some more interesting questions and things to talk about in general.  That doesn't mean all the questions have to be political, far from it, anything goes in Ask Matt Anything, but it is just another avenue to explore.

As an added bonus, as returns come in and this thread stays active, I will post them in the comments section as well as the answers to any and all questions that come my way.

The specifics are

Ask Matt Anything #2, Nov 4th, 2008, 8pm EST right here on this very thread.  Be there or be a 4 sided object, consisting of 4 sides of equal length, with the sides forming 4 right angles.

  1. As always, early questions can be submitted and I will get to them as time allows, if no one shows up that could be quickly, if I have a roomful of people (highly unlikely) then it make take a bit.

  2. So that would Midday on the 5th for us....I think that's do-able.

    ReplyDelete
  3. do you still have that same can of beer in your fridge from four years ago and can i drink it ?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Cool, I will get to start Tuesday night with a story if all else fails.

  7. Just a quick note, we may be unavailable for a couple of minutes at the start, I am reading the message on top of my Multiply screen now, it is a issue wilth them, not us. All the more time to grab a cup of java or whatever it is you grab and settle in.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Okay, according to my browser CNN has made the following calls

Kentucky - McCain 8 electoral votes
Vermont - Obama 3 electoral votes

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm getting a warning message that multiply will be unavailable from 8pm est lol
doesn't sound like it will be a long one though

    ReplyDelete
  10. crap I didn't see your prev message re that! *indulges in a blonde moment*

    ReplyDelete
  11. We will work around it as best as possible.

  12. Hey your a Get Fuzzy fan right?
Have you been following them lately? Are they anti democrat or do they pick on the repugly's as well?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am here, let's see if I get booted.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Actually, I don't know if they are in the paper here at all, I rarely get to teh funnies these days, and when I do, I usually just read Dilbert. All of the ones I liked are not in production anymore, including Boondocks and Calvin and Hobbes.

  15. I would argue that you could find everything for a wedding in my fridge, something old (lots of less than edible things), something new (including the Milky Way Candy bars I bought yesterday), something borrowed (some of my mom's tupperware containers) and something blue (the mold that has accrued on the old food I haven't thrown out). With that out of the way, I still have that wretched beer in my fridge, though I think it has been longer than 4 years now.

Brief story, Rich and I both managed at the same pizza shop an there was a beer distributor a few doors down from us. Given we were located on a college campus, during summer business would be slow, so we would sometimes imbibe of the beverage, with the owner's blessing, as long as we didn't get drunk and could still do our jobs. That being said, one night we gather up some coins between us to get a case of beer and we send one of our workers, Mike, down to get a case of beer, thinking he would come back with something good, we had collected enough money that a decent if not exquisite beer could be purchased. Instead he came back with a case of Iron City, which is a local brewed piss beer. Really, it makes Pabst seem like a fine wine by comparison. I have always kept one can from that case in my fridge as a reminder to never let anyone buy my beer again, especially without my knowledge of what they were getting beforehand.

As a bonus, the case of Iron City did give birth to a Friday night tradition that summer, called "Good Beer Friday", where every Friday we would get either a microbrew or an import to drink, because on at least one day, I wanted something that was worth the money spent on it.

But as to the answer, yes the beer is still there, if you really want to drink it, more power to you, I know I never will.

  16. And so far it is still working, woohoo!

  18. I was hoping they would have done the maintenance, just made coffee & a sandwich. spring rolls will have to be for later, maybe dinner, I didn't realise I needed to marinate all the veggies.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nothing yet, or if it is taking place, by sitting here I may have avoided it. Luckily I had a long story to tell, or longish for comments sake anyway.

  21. your can of beer story reminds me of our own family can story. we had a large local canning factory & knowing quite a few people there we used to regularly get cases of cans on the staff sales day through them. At around 10-15c a can it was quite a bargain. One sale day a friend that got our order for various canned fruits, tomato sauces etc threw in a couple of cases (each case had 18 cans in it) of canned pasta spirals. I don't buy that sort of stuff normally but we decided to try it one night. Boy was it vile! We tried giving away the rest of the cans figuring someone else might like it. Well that started a tradition...I dont know anyone who we gave a few cans to that thought it was ok. At xmas we got several nicely wrapped packages with....you guessed it, the unwanted cans. So now every year they are passed on to someone else as a xmas joke.

but speaking of cans....I do have a question for you. In your glog you mentioned you had canned chicken. I've never heard of it being sold in a can here. Is it precooked, smoked? or what???

    ReplyDelete
  22. Multiply will do their work at 8:30 now, so we may be interrupted, so if you ahve questions, get them in now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. okay I have another one... Have you heard from Lynne lately? has she managed to pick up another gig yet or is she doing something else?

    ReplyDelete
  24. It is like canned tuna, it is better for making things like chicken salad and what not, I just wanted to try it in a quesadilla yesterday, probably a mistake on my part. I believe that it is just precooked, much like chicken strips in the deli section, but rather than refrigerated, this is canned instead.

  25. She has a couple of opportunities on the table, but both would pretty much require her to buy time and then make the money back through her advertisers. In one instance, she would do all of the legwork, but would receive all of the ad revenue, in the other she would have a sales staff work for her, but she would only receive half of the ad money for the spots (plus her talent fee if it is a live read) but it is more expensive andI don't know what would happen if they didn't hit their ad projections, if it they would lower her cost per hour, or if she would just receive less of a percentage of the revenue generated.

    ReplyDelete
  26. haven't listened to the last show yet, probably will find time this weekend.
from what I heard over the previous few sounded like she had some loyal existing advertisers, she quite possibly could make it work.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Election update NBC

called for Obama - New Hampshire

    ReplyDelete
  28. I watched the last 10 minutes of the eBay auction on the Sarah Palin doll last night. It jumped from $10600 to $19 k in that time......haven't heard what the others went for. Do you know?

    ReplyDelete
  29. She does have some, whether she could make up enough revenue to make either venture profitable is the question. In the first venture, she would probably have to hire at least one person to work with her, I don't think they have anyone on site, in the second venture she would have at least a board op to work with, how much that person would do i don't know as far as booking guests and contributing to the show, but it is a bit more pricey so she would need almost all of her former advertisers to jump on board to make it a profitable venture.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Okay, I think we are back in business.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ebay bids have a tendency of jumping up quickly in price as the clock is ticking down on them, so it doesn't surprise me, mor would it surprise me if some of the last few bids end up being disqualified, which also happens alot. We had it happen locally when a guy tried to auction off his strip club on ebay, the last few bids were more jokes than serious offers.

    ReplyDelete
  32. back here as well.
I'm a last minute bidder usually, but those bids sure were jumping faster than I could refresh lol

Obama's doll was around the 3k mark last time I heard....McCain & Biden's were pretty low but I never heard the final amounts.

    ReplyDelete
  33. How long is the election coverage meant to go on? It's on over here I believe but I can't be bothered watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A reset of the election totals (NBC)

    Obama 175 McCain 76

McCain takes SC, GA, ARK, KY, TN, OK, KS, WY, ND, AL
Obama takes PA, MA, ME, RI, DE, VT, NH, MN, MI, IL, WI, CT, NJ, NY, DC, MD

    ReplyDelete
  35. It will go on probably all night, but the serious coverage will just be for teh President, in which case you are looking for someone to get 270 electoral votes. There will still be Senate and House races going on, which will not get nearly the serious coverage of the Presidential race. Mind you, for us out west, the polls haven't even closed yet, people are still casting ballots.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You mentioned Pogo is releasing Yahtzee soon, I haven't read a newsletter for awhile, did they give a release date?

    ReplyDelete
  37. And what is your favourite Pogo game & why

    ReplyDelete
  38. Explain to me how Oklahoma is a red state given that around 1million registered voters are Democrat and 790k are Republican!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not that I saw, it was just across the top of the screen and one of their promo items that sometimes flash up there. All it said was there would be a couple ways to play it, and each game would be about 6 min long, max, so I assumed they are timed

    ReplyDelete
  40. Matt's just gone to get you refreshments

    and I'm good thanks

    ReplyDelete
  41. I could use some serious Dew thats for sure

    ReplyDelete
  42. back, actually it was an explorer problem, but it allowed me to get some french fries out of the oven.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I still dont get how he's known as "black" at the most he's half black, there is some white in there some where seems everyone has forgotten that

    ReplyDelete
  44. Because Republicans traditionally are more likely to vote, they loyally turn out to the polls. It is one of the reasons that they talk about the weather so much on election day, bad weather further dampens turnout, usually for Democrats.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Not bad, we have made it through the technical problems now, thank goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Was very nice today so they have no excuses!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I always use the traffic stop test, if he is pulled over by the cops, is he treated as a black man or a white man. technically barack and Dick Cheney are like 6th or 7th cousins, but nobody calls Cheney half black.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just went and had a quick look on one of the groups I belong to....the usually very vocal republicans are unusally quiet today.....all crying in front of the tv I suspect lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. The numbers weren't looking good going in, it really was a matter of how bad would it be, in the Senate they are wondering if the Dems will get enough seats to override a filibuster, which would be 60 of the 100 seats, and they are expected to make gains in the House as well, so we are looking at one party rule for at least two years, unless McCain pulls what would have to be an upset at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Matt how do you make your iced tea? I've never tried it, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of iced coffee.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Phil didn't think it would happen and right now it is 52-34, with 16 still undecided (the two independents weren't up for reelection, so he definitely got those two right).

    ReplyDelete
  52. Cains is the best brand of tea :-)

    ReplyDelete
  53. That was like a huge lag in posting :-(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Usually I have an empty gallon jug handy (when I drink it, it is by the gallon), then I take a small to medium sauce pan, fill it with water and 4 tea bags and brew it on the stove. While it is brewing, I pour 1 cup of sugar into the one gallon jug. When the tea has sufficiently brewed, I pour the tea into the jug and shake it up, so that the sugar dissolves, then fill the rest of the jug with cool water, shake again and refrigerate.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I had a tea maker (loved it best ever invention) but its broke so I have to boil water and put my tea bag in it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. 4 tea bags?? What size tea bags you use?

    ReplyDelete
  57. You boil the water with your tea bags in it?

    ReplyDelete
  58. New update

    Obama 200 McCain 85

Add OH and NM for Obama, LA for McCain

    ReplyDelete
  59. See I dunno if I could do the sugar thing......I can't stand it in hot beverages like tea or coffee.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Don't add sugar. You can have iced tea sugarless if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just regular tea bags, though I take the paper off of the end and try to trim down the string, and I do add the tea bags before ehating the water, i want the tea to actually brew on the stove.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like sweetened tea, if the tea is cold enough, liek if I am at a restaurant, I might use Sweet N Low instead, just because it dissolves better in cold beverages that actual sugar does.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Your bags dont explode? I use 1 quart cains tea bag and I wait until the water has boiled before I add it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm going to experiment this weekend, I'll make 2 half gallon lots, one with sugar & one without, see which I prefer

    ReplyDelete
  65. well if that happens you could always just strain it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ralphy said he had never heard of Cains, I cant move to Canada without a good supply of Cains tea being shipped lol

    ReplyDelete
  67. I don't look to necessarily boil the water, I am just looking to brew the tea, boiling nisn't required, as long as it is hot and the tea bags are doing there thing, all is good.

    ReplyDelete
  68. And its not too strong using 4 bags?

    ReplyDelete
  69. can't say I have heard of it either, but we could stock it, I just don't pay attention unless I'm looking for a certain brand.

    ReplyDelete
  70. did you answer this Q and I missed it?

    ReplyDelete
  71. No, because if I am just making a cup of tea, I would use one bag, if anything, 4 can be too few if you don't leave it brewq long enough.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not yet, got caught up in the iced tea and this.........

    ReplyDelete
  73. Election update,

McCain takes WV Obama leads 200-90

    ReplyDelete
  74. approx how long do you leave it brewing?

    ReplyDelete
  75. McCain took Texas on my channel and raised him to 124

    ReplyDelete
  76. Not sure, it goes in spurts, but if I had to pick just one, probably Scrabble, though I like Lottso, Dice City Roller and Everyone Wins Bingo also. And I did knock off the level 50 badge in Kenopop, so I never have to play that game again.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I pretty much just eyeball it, I don' ahve a set amount of time, but I don't blast heat underneath it either where it will go all crazy and start boiling real fast. I am patient in making my tea, itb make take a couple of extra minutes, but it is worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I have been watching NBC, I had CNN up on my browser, but they were way slkow in calling states.

    ReplyDelete

  82. back

Yeah I'm on level 50 for that one.

My fav at the moment is everyone wins bingo.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Sorry for the deletes, wanted to attach answers to questions./comments.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hey do either of you remember Donno's (aka Marksman) son Tim from hike? I can't recall what nic he used...he had several?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Doesn't ring a bell for me, but I would be hard pressed to remember many of the handles in there.

    ReplyDelete
  86. No worries, he's got a multiply account & was just looking to increase his contacts. I was trying to remember who he used to chat with to get him hooked up again.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I may have chatted with him, I chatted with many people in there, I just don't remember handles. It is why I just stuck with my name in here, I can usually remember that.

    ReplyDelete
  88. NBC just called Texas for McCain

    Obama 200 McCain 124

    ReplyDelete
  89. well if you feel inclined to stop by his page his addy is http://timjen.multiply.com/

    Very nice guy!

he's doing something with an online tv channel, I haven't got my head around what exactly he's doing with it....

    ReplyDelete
  90. The election is all but over save for the crying, McCain would have to win just about every state left on the board, because he will lose California, I don't even think he campaigned there, so you can put another 55 in the Obama column.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Utah - McCain, Iowa Obama

    Obama leads 207-129

    ReplyDelete
  92. Can we call this yet, Obama will take California, that's another 55 so he is almost at the magic 270.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Ok I heard something about a late ballot issue in Virginia. Is this a problem elsewhere?

    ReplyDelete
  94. I am sure there will be minor glitches everywhere, there almost always are, it is just that now everything is under a media microscope, which overstates the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  95. do you want me to elaborate on what I heard?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Right now I have Barack leading there 50%-49% with 83% reporting.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It seems that absentee ballots weren't mailed on time to many military members serving overseas. so a fed court judge has ordered that any ballots received after 7pm today be preserved. there is a further court hearing scheduled on 10 Nov to hear the lawsuit which is asking for these late votes to be counted.

I was wondering if this was just a local issue or whether other military members from other states had a similar problem with their mail?

    ReplyDelete
  98. I havent heard anything about it here in Oklahoma.

    ReplyDelete
  99. maybe it's just isolated to Virgina then.

    ReplyDelete
  100. But are they all residents of Virginia, or are they just stationed there? If the votes are spread out over a number of states, while I wouldn't say they don't count, I doubt they will change the outcomes all that much.

    ReplyDelete
  101. well that's it I don't know? The item was thin on detail just said the law suit was filed in Virgina on behalf of the McCain campaign.

    ReplyDelete
  102. darn I've cleared my browser history since I read it.
can't be too major if it hasn't got a lot of national coverage

    ReplyDelete
  103. Well I know my mom's husband, when in teh service, was staioned at Norfolk Naval station, but he was still a resident of PA, so his absentee ballot would have been a PA one, had he been still in the service for this election.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Mississippi in the McCain column, now at 207-135.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Ok guys I'm off to put Christian to bed and then myself. Gnite yall xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  106. I am sure there will be lots of blurbs like that, I know there were problems at my polling place, just because of the sheer number of people that opted to vote this year, couple that with the fact that most of the poll workers are elderly and I am sure the task can be overwhelming for them. I know they were trying to get people to the right polling place today to vote, because they would show up at the wrong one or their name would be in the book for another polling station even though that was the one they were supposed to vote at.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I'm just gobsmacked really that you all put up with such a long and drawn out process to elect a president.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Well, I enjoy the theater of it all, though the extremists from either side tend to sicken me. I don't doubt either of these guys believe they are the right man for the moment, I just have fundamental differences of opinion with one more than the other. Still, it does play out all sort of soap opera-ish, which can make for good TV.

    ReplyDelete
  109. voter registration and election day will always have a degree of glitches, no system is perfect.

It's the months and months of campaigning that gets me
    and the fixation on non-issues
down here they campaign for like 6 weeks & then we vote...that seems bad enough

    ReplyDelete
  110. And as convoluted as the process is, it could be worse. If it were a straight popular vote, right now it would be 50%-49% in favor of Obama with almost 60 million votes cast. I don't want to be part of any recount when the popular vote decides it all.

    ReplyDelete
  111. well under a FPP (first past the post) system they really only call for the recount in the electoral areas where the results are really close.....they don't normally recount the entire vote.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Q: Legally over there are you required to register as a voter? I know actually voting is optional.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Usually there are some stipulaions built into any recount system, but if a candidate is scraping and scrounging for each and every vote, a nationwide recount can be quite problematic. In 1960, Nixon Kennedy was decided buy just a couple hundred thousand votes after a national election, litterally tenths of a point, it would be hard to deny someone recounts wherever they thought they could get a few hundred votes in that atmosphere.

    ReplyDelete
  114. You are not required, but many states make it automatic when you get something like a driver's license, then you automatically are registered to vote as well, or they will let you register to vote at the same time, but it isn't a legal requiredment that you must register to vote, which is why there are always massive voter registration drives leading up to a Presidential election. Even MTV has been doing their Rock the Vote campaign for what seems like a couple of decades now, trying to get more people registered.

    ReplyDelete
  115. McCain gets South Dakota and its 3 electoral votes. Now it is 207-138.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Tack on Nebraska as well for McCain, he is up to 143.

    ReplyDelete
  117. In NZ we have a legal requirement to be registered as a voter, it's considered part of your civic responsibilities. They use voter electoral rolls to select people to be called up for jury service.

edited to add: you are not compelled to vote but you must be registered.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I consider it a civic responsibility as well, which is why i am not big on the giveaways for people doing what they should do as citizens. That being said, if we are going to profess to be a free society, people have to have the freedom to not vote I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I agree with you.

That's why the system here in Australia is so strange....

There is no requirement to register as a voter but once you do you are legally required to vote. And they do follow through with fines or prosecutions if you don't have a good reason for not voting.

So they get an over 90% turn out on polling day.....whether they get 'quality" votes is another matter, people are being forced to vote against their will.

    ReplyDelete
  120. As a voter I find that offputting. I don't want my vote negated by someone that doesn't even want to be there. The fewer poeple that vote, the more important my vote, I don't qwnat the government minimizing that power.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Ive been paying so much attention to your election I haven't even looked at who is running in NZ and I think I have to vote soon lol

    ReplyDelete
  122. Our election is like a car wreck, you can't help but look.

    ReplyDelete
  123. crap I've got about 2 weeks, well less than that considering mine is a postal vote

    ReplyDelete
  124. But at the end of the day, whomever win is going to be hamstrung by our current circumstances. There is part of me that wonders why anyone would want the job right now, because it would take something along the lines of a miracle worker to be regarded highly 4 years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  125. yeah I was thinking that, the recession isn't going away overnight that's for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  126. NBC just called the race for Obama.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Glad I don't live anywhere near Chicago tonight, they have a crowd approaching half a million people out to see him speak, that place will be a madhouse.

    ReplyDelete
  128. so do the results pan out pretty much as expected?
will McCain concede or wait until the bitter end?

    ReplyDelete
  129. I imagine he will concede, Obama is projected at 284 right now and there are still some states to report, but the polls closed out west and Obama took the entire west coast, which isn't surprising. California's 55 electoral votes were going to make it almost impossible for McCain to come back, Obama taking Oregon and Washington as well just put it completely out of reach.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I'm just looking at my election stuff now

both of the major candidates in my electorate are personal friends... I even used to date one of them back in the day. I'm going to have to give my vote to the party I prefer.

    ReplyDelete
  131. So, in a different set of circumstances you could have been the First Lady of New Zealand, should I congratulate you yet, or wait for the votes to be cast, lol?

    ReplyDelete
  132. No they aren't running for Prime Minister lol

    ReplyDelete
  133. You get two votes in NZ.
A party vote which determines the number of seats in parliament that political party holds
and a second vote to elect your local representative. (which is a FPP winner)

Whoever wins the majority of seats in parliament becomes the new government. The leader of that party automatically becomes the Prime Minister.

    ReplyDelete
  134. NBC is saying that McCain just called Obama and conceded the election, meanwhile Virginia has been called for Obama, Phil's pick of 344 electoral votes looks very possible.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Bet there will be champagne corks popping in the Obama camp tonight.

  136. Here you have a primary that is designed to determine who will be the nominee for each party in the general election, then you vote for the President (every 4 years), Senators (every 6 years, staggered so each two years one third is up for election), and Representatives (every two years).

  137. McCain is about to speak, and presumably concede.

  138. In our system the public doesn't get a say as to who is the leader of the party. They decide that themselves.

But they are usually pretty quick to replace an unpopular leader if they are lagging in the polls.

  139. Phil is getting closer, it is 333-156 with 5 states yet to be determined.

  140. He will miss the Senate by a seat or two, the Republicans have 40 seats so far, a little ahead of his 39, but there are only 4 seats that have yet to be determined.

  141. he's done well to get this close with his prediction.

    ReplyDelete
  142. 338 now, with 4 states left, but none give the exact number of 344, but he could actually get well above it if he runs the table in the last 4.

  143. And Obama is to speak in about 15 minutes or so, after which I should probably go to bed, as it will be well after midnight here.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Yeah I've got to get a move on soon as well, nearly 4pm here ...

  146. But I've learnt a few new things

and I'll let you know what I think of your iced tea recipe.

the veggies for the spring rolls are done, I just have to figure out how to wrap them properly.
he's off to work soon so I won't make his dinner til about midnight anyway, I have plenty of time lol

    ReplyDelete
  147. Well, it's not much of a recipe really, at least i don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  148. oh trust me it helps to know how someone else does it. I probably wouldn't have thought to add extra water to dilute it.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Well it dilutes it and it cools it off quicker, the sugar trick I just do so I am not trying to dissolve it in a cold beverage, because it never works for me, it always just goes to the bottom and lays there.
