Fantasy Hockey 2009 - the thread

Like last year, I am once again involved in fantasy hockey.  Unlike last year I am merely a participant, after trying to set up a league last year, only to find myself scrambling for teams at the last moment.  While I appreciate those that did partake of the league (and those that kicked my ass I might add), setting up a league and finding enough participants is far harder than in say, fantasy football.  Instead this year I just joined a public league on Yahoo, so I didn't have to hunt down teams.

With that being said, week one is complete and  I posted a 4-5-1 record (4-5-1 overall as well), but I did pick an MVP every week last year and will do so again this year.  MY first week's MVP is Ilya Kovalchuk, who post a line of 5 G, A, +2, 6 penalty minutes, 2 power play points and 11 shots on goal.

I plan on using this thread for the remainder of the season to post my fantasy hockey MVPs.  Unlike football, I haven't found a good video service to use to put video together, probably due to the fact that teams play a multiple of games through the course of a week, so there is no fantasy hockey highlights for me to edit.

Before I conclude I do need to make mention of a trade that I completed and was made official Tuesday, effective Wednesday.  I dealt Tomas Vanek, Johnathon Toews and Evgeni Nabakov for Pekke Rinne, Chris Drury and Alexander Ovechkin.  I didn't propose the trade but was happy to jump on the opportunity to get Ovechkin on my roster and as it turned out Vanek got hurt in Tuesday's game, so I ended up dealing a hurt player for a healthy one.  I will make that trade any day.

Well from here on the comments section, besides any that the general public may offer, will be the weekly MVPs of this year's hockey team.

  3. Well I am just using this thread for my fantasy team, the Penguin videos I steal from the NHL channel on Youtube, where the league posts highlights of all of the games. Me being a Pens fan, I just steal the Pens games, though I have been watching Hockey Night on Yahoo, it is something Yahoo hasn't messed up yet. I think they have two games tonight. I am hoping to catch at least part of one.

  6. The Johnstown Chiefs? I have family out in that neck of the woods in Windber, though they are on my dad's side so I haven't seen them in ages.

  7. Week 3 Record 3-5-2, 11-16-3 overall

Third straight losing week, a bad way to start the season and worse Kovalchuk may be hurt, he is in for x-rays today on his foot. If it weren't for bad luck I would have no luck at all.

This just in, Kovalchuk has a broken bone in his foot and is out for 4 weeks. I am being Martin Broduer-ed for the second straight year.

    As for this week's MVP Paul Statsny - 3 G, A, 8 PIM, 2 PPP, 11 SOG

  8. Week 4 Record 7-3-0, 18-19-3 overall

Finally a winning week, but at a major cost as the injuries keep piling up. I drafted Marian Hossa knowing full well he was hurt to start the year, but figured I could ride the tide for the time being and when he became healthy I would have a first or second round talent on my roster for a much cheaper price (drafted in the seventh round). Ah but the best laid plans, last week I mentioned that Ilya Kovalchuk went to the IR, this week it was Jean Sebastian Giguere off to the IR and Devin Setoguchi who missed the entire week with an injury that is undisclosed by his team. While I managed to dump Giguere with litttle harm to my roster (he wasn't even starting in goal for Anaheim), Setoguchi had 7 goals in the teams first nine games. That means I am carrying three hurt guys on my roster, and with only one IR spot, I am playing two men down for the forseeable future. Anyway, enough of the groaning, part two of that monster trade I made to start the year paid off this week, as the MVP of week 4 is

    Pekka Rinne - 3 W, 0.76 GGA, .968 SV %, 1 SO

  9. And now it looks like Ovechkin may be hurt as well, my team logo should just be a robe and sickle.

  10. Week 5 Record 2-8-0, 20-27-3 overall

Another week and the bodies keep piling up, this time it was Chris Drury who ended up sidelined with a concusssion by weeks end. The brought the number of guys on my roster that are out to 5, but Drury is not much of a loss so I cut him and added Steve Reinprecht instead for the coming week. Still no word on Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Hossa or Setoguchi for when any of them might return, but they are all too valuable for me to cut, I just hope they are able to dig me out of the hole that they are all currently digging me in to. You know it is a sad wek when this is my weekly MVP

    Ryan Malone - 2 G, A, +2, PPP, 16 SOG

  11. Week 6 4-5-1, 24-32-4 overall

Another losing week, but one I can live with given how beat up my roster has been and the fact I was playing the first place team. With the odds against me I will take a 4-5-1 week and knowing my roster is getting healthier, Kovalchuk is back as is Setoguchi and Ovechkin is due back soon (maybe this week) and Hossa is scheduled back within the next two weeks, I have a chance to actually make a move in the near future. Still, I have to pck an MVP from another losing week, and we have our first two time winner

    Pekka Rinne - 2 W, 0.50 GAA, .976 SV%, 1 SO

  12. Week 7 7-2-1, 31-34-5 overall

My best week to date, but not without some problems as Setoguchi reaggravated his injury leaving himself in a day to day sitaution, but most days this week it was just watching from the pine. Still there were a few names I could pull from for MVP, as a decent chunk of my roster contributed but if I have to pick a name I guees it would be the same as last week, given how he carried my goaltending this week.

    Pekka Rinne - 3 W, 2.53 GAA, .910 SV%

  13. Week 8 4-3-3, 35-37-8 overall

Two winning weeks in a row and maybe, just maybe I am starting to get on a roll. As an added bonus all of my players that were on the injured reserve have been returned to active status. The goal when I drafted Marian Hossa was to just be able to maintain a decent record until he was back and he is back now and all of my other players that got hurt during the season are also back so now we get to see just what a complete roster can actually do. As for who to pick for the weekly MVP there were a couple of guys I could have chose from, their stats were pretty similar so I will go with the lesser heralded player of the two.

    Olli Jokinen - 2 G, 4 A, +1, 2 PIM, 1 PPP, 13 SOG

  14. Week 9 2-7-1, 37-44-9 overall

Suffice it to say that everything that had been going right went wrong. Pekka Rinne was terrible in goal this week, Alexander Ovechkin served a three game suspension for a knee on knee hit he delivered and we are still waiting on the first point from Devin Setoguchi since coming back from the injured reserve but for the time being he remains buried on the San Jose Sharks depth chart. Add all of that up and it equals an end to my brief run of two above .500 weeks.

If left to pick an MVP from a week of underachieving performances I am left with

    Paul Statsny - G, 5 A, +1, 4 PIM, 2 PPP, 7 SOG

    ReplyDelete
  15. Week 10 4-5-1, 41-49-10 overall

At some point I have to start winning games, the top 6 spots are slowing pulling away from me, I am in 8th place, a good 16 points out of the top 6. It is getting to the point where it will take two great weeks just to get back into contention. When the goatending is good, the offense goes into the tank, when the offense starts rolling I can't buy a goatending win. This week was no different, I go 4-2 in the offensive categories, but 0-3-1 between the pipes. Needless to say the MVP will not be a goaltender.

    Alexander Ovechkin - 3 G, 4 A, +3, 2 PIM, 2 PPP, 23 SOG

  16. Week 11 6-3-1, 47-52-11 overall

At least it was a winning week, I managed to pick up a little ground on the teams ahead of me but it will take a few more weeks like this before I can even think about competing for a playoff spot. Thanksfully there are ten weeks remaining to do so. In any event, there wasn't any standout performaces from my roster, just solid contributions so it was hard to pick this week's MVP but here it is

    Nik Antropov - 3 G, 1 A, -1, 4 PIM, 2 PPP, 7 SOG

  17. Week 12 0-9-1, 47-61-12 overall

I refuse to acknowledge an MVP in a week where I didn't win a game.

  18. Week 13 6-3-1, 53-64-13 overall

Well I managed to post a winning week. I am still way back from where I need to be, but hopefully this will be the strat of something. Now that football season is officially over I can pay more attention to the hockey team. As for an MVP, I think for this week I will go with

    Ilya Kovalchuk - 3 G, 3 A, +4, 1 PPP, 13 SOG

  19. Week 14 2-7-1, 55-71-14 overall

I had almost forgot to update this, what with things going on and me trying to keep the page updated on a relatively frequent basis, but there was a fantasy hockey game last week, much to my chagrin. Actually I was playing the second place team, so I originally hoped I could pick up some ground in the standings but two guys (Nik Antropov, Lubomir Visnovsky) ending up missing the week with injuries. Nothing major where I could have IR-ed them, just tweakages that meant if I cut them I would lose them, as someone would have picked them up. Then again, my team has been bad enough that maybe some heads should roll at this point. But since I wasn't shut out I guees I have to pick an MVP from this mess.

    Alexander Ovechkin - 1 G, 3 A, +6, 4 PIM, 19 SOG

  20. Week 15 8-1-1, 63-72-15 overall

You can tell I had a good week becaue of the speed with which I posted the results. With a week like this it becomes hard to pick an MVP because everyone actually played well. Okay not everyone, Andy Green and Ian White were pretty worthless, but it would be easy to pick any of the big names and givec them the award, after all Ovechkin had 3 G and 7 A, Kovalchuk had 3 G and 3 A but instead I am going to give it up to soemone I picked up last week, after he had a G and 3 A performance against the Penguins. While I didn't get credit for that game, he still went on to have a pretty good week.

    Guillaume Latendresse - 3 G, A, +3, 1 PPP, 8 SOG

  21. Week 16 3-6-1, 66-78-16 overall

It's official, I am now a full 20 points out of the last playoff spot, which measn if I don't turn around my fortunes soon I can all but pack it in for this year. I have 5 weeks and the clock starts ticking now. On the bright side, it makes picking an MVP easier when very few members of the team actually do anything noteworthy.

    Alexander Ovechkin - 3 G, 3 A, +2, 3 PPP, 14 SOG

  22. Week 17 7-1-2, 73-79-18 overall

Like I said last week, the clock starts ticking now, and what made this week particularly gratifying was that I was playing the first place team in the league. This guy was so good that prior to facing me, only twice this year did he post a losing record for a week. I had played him once before and played him close, but still lost 4-5-1 so with everything that is currently at stake and how good he has been playing, I can honestly say that at least for a week my hopes are somewhat elevated. That being said, I did only pick up 3 points on the last playoff spot so my work is far from over. Anyway, time to pick an MVP for the week...

    Antero Niittymaki - 1 W, 0.48 GGA, .985 SV %, 1 SO

  23. Week 18 3-6-1, 76-85-19 overall

Not a good week for me, but I managed to still gain a slight bit of ground on the last playoff spot, now just 16 points back of 6th and 18 points back of 5th place, though I blew a serious chance to pick up ground with my record this week. Still one player did sort of standout, a player who has done so on a regular basis this year.

    Alexander Ovechkin - 7 G, 3 A, +6, 4 PIM, 3 PPP, 18 SOG

  24. Week 19 5-5-0, 81-90-19 overall

Not sure what to make of this week, I was playing the fourth place team (I am currently in 8th), meanwhile the 5th and 6th place teams were also locking up in a matchup. Technically I guess I did okay, playing someone ahead of me in the standings should be considered a good week, but I only managed to pick up two points on the last playoff spot, now trailing the last spot by 14 points. Next up for me is the fifth place team and I need to pull better numbers than this with just two weeks remaining. As for an MVP

    Dan Ellis - 2 W, 1.92 GAA, .944 SV %

  25. Week 20 3-5-2, 84-95-21 overall

Not a very good week. A bad one to be precise. Technically I am still alive for a playoff spot, but it will be a reach and a half. I am currently in 8th place, the top 6 qualify and I am a robust 17 points behind 6th place. Technically a team can garner 20 points in a week, provided they go 10-0-0, but I would still need the 6th and 7th place teams to have horrible weeks in order to make it to the post season and not be relegated to the consolation bracket. Still I did win a few games this week so an MVP is in order

    Guillaume Lantendresse - 3 G, 1 A, 1 PPP, 12 SOG

  26. Week 21 7-3-0, 91-98-21 overall

Season complete and I gained no ground and will be playing in the consolation bracket, or as I like to refer to it, the losers bracket. Not that I had a bad week, most weeks I would take 7 wins, but this was not most weeks. Worse still was the 6th place team went 10-0 so I actually lost ground, fininshing 23 points out of a playoff spot. The only plus is that technically I have a bye in the losers bracket so I have a week to lick my wounds. But a week where I win a game is a week where I have top pick an MVP so here goes

    Pekka Rinne - 2 W, 1.00 GAA, .961 SV %, 1 SO

  27. Consolation bracket Semifinal 9-1-0, 100-99-21 overall

By virtue of having the 8th seed I was afforded a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket, which I still will call the losers bracket. That being said my goal now is just to finish the year with a record above .500 for the season and this week certainly helped. Up next is the ever so important 7th place game, woohoo. Where was this team a few weeks ago when I could have used a couple of 9-1 weeks, instead it shows up now when I am playing for pride and little more. Oh well, as for the MVP

    Johan Hedberg - 1 W, 0.00 GAA, 1.000 SV %, 1 SO

  28. Consolation bracket final 7-1-2, 107-100-23 overall

My last posting of the season and it is a winner, I finished 7th out of 12 teams in this year's league, not a great accomplishment, but I did finish strong at least, going 16-2-2 in my psuedo playoff games. Thanks to everyone who put up with this comment thread for another season, there is only one more think to add before it is complete, this week's MVP

    Tuukka Rask - 2 W, 0.64 GAA, .971 SV %, 1 SO
