Fantasy Baseball 2010 - The thread

Here to replace the just completed fantasy hockey season is the new fantasy baseball season.  I opted for a different sort of league this year.  Usually there are two major types of leagues, the rotisserie variety where stats are accumulated in categories and then the teams are ranked and awarded points based on how they do in those categories.  For example, in a 12 team league, if you were currently second in a category, say home runs as an example, you team would be awarded 11 points.  You then take the total points awarded out of your placement in all of the categories (most baseball leagues tend to go with a 5X5 format, that is 5 hitting and 5 pitching categories) to determine your overall status.  The other option is a head to head league, where you play one other team from the league over the course of a week.  Like a rotisserie league, you compete in specific categories, but the totals only count for that week and each category you are ahead in at the end of the week counts as a win in the overall standings.  Unlike a rotissiere league where stats are accumulated season long, in head to head at the end of the week the board is efffectively erased, a new opponent for the next week is determined and the process repeats itself for the next seven days.

All of that being said, I opted to try a new format being offered over at ESPN.com, one where it is simply total points accumulated.  Everything a player does can either earn or cost you points and at the end of each day you teams total points gets counted into a grand total.  Because I am not in a specific league there, I am basically just competing against anyone else who is playing the game, meaning my chance of coming in in the top three is almost impossible, there will probably be tens of thousands of people participating in the game, so my goal will be quite simple, do better than average.  Anything above that will be gravy.

Like the hockey league, I will post weekly updates in the comment section.  They will of course offer some wry, rather unastute commentary from yours truly as well as a few of the leagues basics, such as top score from the week, my score from the week, the weekly scoring average of all teams and my overall rank.  Yes I will pick an MVP, but rather than sit here and try to break down daily box scores because you can change your roster on a daily basis, instead it will simply be the person who had the best game on my best day of the week.  An example from my current week is that on 4/7 my team earned 81 points, and my best player that day was Matt Garza, who garnered 27 points as I had the Tampa Bay pitching staff that day, so he would be my presumptive MVP (though technically for pitching purposes you get the stats accumulated by the entire staff that day, but the game doesn't distinguish between pitchers, you just get credit for the staff effort, I just mentioned Garza because he started that game).

Hopefully that was confusing enough.  Anyway, let the games once again begin.

  1. I managed to dig up the rules of how to play this game. For those that are interested they can be found here http://games.espn.go.com/bbc/en/story?pageName=bbc\howtoplay

  2. Well I guess I kind of gave away my MVP in the upper section for Week #1 of the baseball season, that of course being Matt Garza/Tampa Bay pitching staff, who registered 27 points for me on April 7th. As for how I did after week 1...

    Top score - 531
    My score - 368

I'll take being almost in the top 15% after week one. I could be doing much worse, but I scored better than average every day of the week, my best being on 4/7 when I tallied 81 points and the high score for the day was just 93. Of course as the season progresses I imagine some people will just drop out, or just play the same guys day after day, regardless of whether they have a game or not but I will do my best to put in a lineup every single day.

    Position player MVP - Ryan Howard 1B, Evan Longoria 3B - 10pts

  3. Well week #2 is in the books and for the most part it was another good week for me. Not great, after all I have no dreams about cash and prizes in my near future, but good in that I am living up to what I expecty of myself in this venture. Another 5 of 7 days I finished above the average game player and actually approved my standing from an overall perspective.

  4. Week #3 Another week down and I need to make a change, because with the way thye scoring is set up it is almost a given that a pitching staff will always be my highest scoring player and rather than just post pitching staff after pitching staff, I will also add the highest scoring position player on my highest scoring day to the MVP status. I realize this means a lot of editing but oh well, what else will I do, actually write a blog or something? Anyway the verdict is in for week #3

  5. Week #4 Thankfully all of my games ended early today so I can post the results much earlier than I had originally anticipated. Another week where every day I managed to score better than the league average, which leaves my current standing looking something like this

  7. Week #6 Some numbers got inflated, as I had players in doubleheaders on more thgan one occasion. As a result my pitching MVP is actually the result of two games, not 1. As for the rest of the week, not great, not terrible. One bad day ruined what could have been a productive week. Still I finished okay.

  8. Week #7 No double headers this week, but by the same token I didn't have one of those crushingly bad days this week either, no day where I only pulled single digits. I did fall below the league average one day this week, but even that day I managed to get at leasy double digits. As for where I sit after 7 weeks of this game

  9. Week #8 Another up and down week, the game is getting harder as the salaries of players flucuate, meaning it is harder to stay under the $50 million salary cap while putting forth a full roster every day. For the record it was a pretty much nothing week, no big jumps or drops

  10. Week #9 I feel like I am just running in place at this point, my overall percentage doesn't jump around a whole lot, just kinda stays around 90% or so. That being said I was reading the entry from one fo the ESPN guys that is part of this, a fantasy expert if you will, and he is teetering around 50%. While he could be in a league where you can only set a lineup weekly (I am in a daily one), all of the people he would be competing against would be in the same boat, and if he is an "expert" and half of the entrants are kicking his ass, then one has to question his expertise, or at least let me apply for that job, I couldn't do any worse.

  11. Week #10 I guess we could just call this wash, rinse, repeat. Another week where not much happened. technically I dropped, ever so slightly, another .2 of a point, but given I under the league average 4 out of 7 days I will take that. Managing the salary cap is becoming more of a pain as the better players are all getting out of my price range. Luckily there is always the "play guys that are going against Pittsburgh/Baltimore" option when in doubt about who to grab.

  12. Week #11 Apparently we are getting close to the end of the first half of this contest, by the looks of thinks the baseball season is broken into two halfs, the first half is 14 weeks long. If my goal was to stay in the top half of all entries I think we can almost assuredly say now mission accomplished. Another so so week, but even so so weeks keep me floating around 90%, well above the initial starting goal.

  13. Week #12 Technically the week still isn't over, I could get another point or three since I have manny Ramirez and Curtis Granderson in the Yankees/Dodgers matchup, a game that is tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning as I type this. The thing is though, as the clock is approaching midnight I am not going to sit around for another point or two, which will barely affect my overall total at this point. Instead I will just go with the numbers I have right now.

  14. Week #13 One week left in the first half of this contest, then the numbers all reset and we start from square one again. Technically this could have been a good week for me, but it all got pissed away with a -9 on Saturday due to some very inept pitching and non existent hitt, much like the Pittsburgh Pirates, hell the Pirates might have beaten my club that day. I still manage a slight, slight gain, another .1% so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

  15. Week #14 Compliments of a complete and utter meltdown on the last day of the first half of the season by my pitching staff I actually fell below 90%, which sucks ass. My goal was simple, I was pretty close to the daily salary cap, so I thought I would go cheaper on the pitching, after all Zack Grienke of KC was scheduled and while the Royals pretty much suck, he is a decent pitcher who may someday end up on a quality ballclub. Of course after the rosters were locked for the day, word comes out Grienke will not pitch, something about a sore shoulder and I am left with Kansas City's crap that they roll out in place of him, which proceeds to generate -36 poi8nts. Thanks guys for all of the suckage. With that the first half of the season is complete and here is how I fared.

  16. Week 15 The contest starts all over again, everyone goes back to zero points and we have another 12 week sprint to the finish. As I noted in a previous entry, I actually got off to a good start this week, and as I also suggested that meant I was due for an ass kicking which came about today with a measly 6 points. The only plus is that it is only one week and while the numbers aren't terribly good, I didn't fall too far behind from a points perspective.

  17. Week 16 Not a bad week for me, not great but not bad. I did mnage to beat the league average in 6 out of 7 days and I think I realized one of my problems in the first half ofthe contest. Far to often I would play matchups with my pitching to save som money for position players and many times I got burned by it. Rather than take a quality staff I would take a mediocre one if they had a weak opponent. This time around I am cutting corners on the position players instead because they can't rack up negative points with a bad outing. As for how the week went, I am better off than week one of round two, that's for sure.

  19. Week 18 Technically the week isn't over, there is still a game Sunday night, but I have no guys playing in it, so I figured I would go ahead and get this out of the way while watching the Dallas-Cincinnati preseason game. I kind of plodded around this week, missing two days of putting in a lineup. Sure the lineup from the previous day carries over, but it isn't necessarily the guys I wanted to play. Plus I ended up suffering from some guys having games rained out, which means no points for them that day. The best thing I can say is I survived, if nothing else.

  21. Week 20 I am literally just typing whatever comes to mind here, I haven't even looked at the scores for the week yet, so I don't know how bad I did. I have reached baseball burnout, what with the Pirates clinching consecutive losing season #18 earlier this week, and the NFL preseason almost half over. Heck even the Penguins are making some moves, signing Aaron Asham this week, baseball is almost completely forgotten in my relatively hectic schedule.

  22. I haven't been here inn a while, that is in large part because I have all but tuned out baseball. With two fantasy football teams currently going and a hockey team kicking off on Thursday, it just became too much to be spending time on a team that realistically didn't have a chance to do much. So the final numbers are in and here is how I did.
